Radical Intervention
Radical Intervention of a Spiritual Nature
By Hawaiian Times, August 2010
“We all have powerful windows of opportunity that open briefly in our lives. These windows offer us improved possibilities for creating better life experiences, should we choose them.”
According to internationally renowned Kumu (teacher), Aunty Mahealani Kuamo’o-Henry this idea ties in directly with the concept of radical intervention of a spiritual nature. Radical intervention is another way to look at the windows of opportunity that occur in our lives. In Hawaiin spirituality, the idea of radical intervention is to pro-actively create the life you want through the practice of pono - excellence and rightness or “making right, more right the path”.
Create the Life you Want
Through the practice of pono, one can make these windows of opportunity common place. Of course, you must consciously choose this path to make it work. Pono, as a practice, gives us the opportunity to attract conditions of "excellence” in our life on a day to day basis.
According to Aunty, pono is but one of the many skills available to us through Hawaiian spirituality today that have withstood the test of time and are just as relevant today as they were hundreds of years ago. Aunty shares this ancient process with others as part of ho' opono pono ke ela to help them reconnect to their own natural power and greatness.
The Fire Goddess
Aunty lives on the Big Island of Hawai'i known as the "island of fire and ice" because it features both the fire of the volcano and the ice of the mountains. It is also widely known as the healing island. And the most visible force on the island is that of the fire goddess Pele. The entire island is subject to her influence and power. One could say it's an excellent place to practice pono!
As Aunty explains, “Pele is an excellent reminder of the powerful, natural energies that we humans can relate to from within our own nature at a cellular level. Pele’s movement releases internal ‘sources’ that result in the creation of new external ‘resources’. The constant creation of new land through volcanic (fire) energy on our island conveys a sense of "radical pono" – the force of movement and change. Our fire goddess Pele does such creations for effective change on the land and in the hearts of visitors who see and feel her awesome presence on display.”
Awe Inspiring Force
Of all the islands in Polynesia and most of the world there isn’t a more timeless, effective, awe inspiring natural force than this fire goddess Pele. She is easily accessible to visitors and island residents who can view her at a safe distance or swim with her in the natural pools that she heats with her volcanic energy. It is said that visitors to this goddess do not leave her presence or her island with empty hearts and that each visit expands the self. The reputation of a “healing island” fits perfectly for the Big Island with the likes of Pele and Aunty doing their powerful energy healings there.
